Simultaneous interpreting is preferred at international atmospheres such as international meetings and workshops.
Conference interpreters work at an interpretation booth to interpret the speech of a speaker simultaneously into the desired language, taking advantage of the technical equipment. Participants listen to the interpreter from the headphones provided to them during the meeting.
A conference speaker speaks at approximately two hundred and fifty words per minute. This means that approximately a hundred and fifty pages are translated during a three-hour meeting. Ideally, two conference interpreters are assigned to such meetings and they work as booth partners so as to ensure healthy working conditions and quality of interpretation services.
This mode of interpreting is preferred at meetings with lower number of participants.
During consecutive interpretation, interpreters have a seat near the speaker or at a place where they can clearly see and hear the speaker. Consecutive interpreters can be thought as “listen, pause and talk interpreters”. They take notes while the speaker makes his/her speech and then interprets what has been said in the target language.
It is important that the speaker is in coordination with the interpreter at such meetings by taking reasonable pauses so the participants won't get distracted and the quality of interpretation is ensured.
Document translation stands for translation of a written document to a target language.
